Cutting-edge technology helps ischemic stroke patients through the MDR in AIS project

The Azienda Ospedaliero-Universitaria Senese and Azienda Usl Toscana Sudest are collaborating on the international MDR in AIS project, funded by the European Union and the Region of Tuscany, to improve the transfer of acute ischemic stroke patients from local hospitals to specialized stroke centers for endovascular treatment. The core of this project is an innovative telemedicine application that enables the secure, real-time sharing of critical clinical information, including neurological status and radiological images, among all involved medical professionals. This aims to significantly reduce the time needed to select eligible patients for mechanical thrombectomy, thereby speeding up transfers and enhancing treatment efficacy, as ischemic stroke is a time-sensitive condition. The project, which also involves centers in Switzerland, Spain, Austria, and Latvia, seeks to demonstrate that these time savings translate into better patient outcomes, solidifying Siena’s role as a key stroke hub for surrounding hospitals.
